This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun and the visitation of Mary to the three children of Fatima, Portugal. We will mark the anniversary by saying a monthly Rosary on the second Sunday of each month, from May to October.
The Miracle of the Sun - as it is now called - happened on October 13, 1917 at Cova de Iria - pasture land owned by the family of Sr. Lucia, one of the visionary children, and now the site of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima - when Mary, to show the world she had visited these children, made the sun dance. Tens of thousands of people witnessed the event; estimates place the crowds gathered on this particular day as being between 30,000 and 40,000.
According to reports of the event, after a heavy rain fell all morning, the skies cleared and the sun appeared to be spinning. After a few moments, the sun was reported to have fallen toward the earth, drying the clothes of those present and the ground on which they stood, before "zig zagging" back to its place in the sky. The church declared the event as an official miracle on October 13, 1930.
We will honor Mary as Our Lady of Fatima and recite the rosary every second Sunday beginning in May, before Mass, beginning at 5:30. All are welcome to attend and pray with us. This anniverysary year, for both Our Lady of Fatima and Dignity/SD, we will entrust ourselves to the tender care and mercy of Our Lady.
